I'm Thankful For: Camaraderie
It’s amazing to think that four months ago I hadn’t met anyone in my program, any of the teachers in my school, or any of my students. In four short months I’ve come to know and love so many new people in my life. For that I’m so blessed. The people in my program are incredible. It’s the first year for all of us, and they chose some of the most talented and...

They All Have a Story...
I was told at the beginning of all of this (and by all of this, I mean teaching) that each kid has a story. (Especially in a school that is 97% below the poverty line.) Yesterday, our new boy Niccoli asked me, “Miss, Miss I got a question. What’s that thing that goes at the end of your words?” Me, “Do you mean a period?” Niccoli, “Yeah, that’s it. Do I...

And She's Off...Sort Of...
I had a sad experience saying goodbye to a student about three weeks ago who was moving to Mexico. Today in my student book club a student asked: “Who are we missing?” Me: “Maritza, but she moved to Mexico a few weeks ago.” Students: “No, I seen her. Me too. She was in our neighborhood playing.” Me: “So she didn’t move?” Students:...

Steps in the Right Direction!
I’ve fully committed to coffee and bought an amazing peppermint mocha (non-dairy) creamer. Yum! Coffee will help me through the late nights and early mornings :)

Falling Off the Tight Rope
This week I’ve had a little awaking in terms of grad school. I have been working hard, but not to the level I need to. It’s the first time in my life I’ve gotten a C on a project that I actually thought I did well on. It’s the first time in 2 1/2 months I’ve really gotten feedback on how I’m doing with my students, and apparently I’m not doing well. ...

Nurse, Mother, Tear Wiper...etc.
Today was a rough day, complicated by a sinus infection rearing it’s ugly head. Today I, as many teachers do, wore many hats. A nurse when a little girl got hit in the eye…wiping her tears away with a little ice pack. A tear wiper to a little boy who was so overcome by the character in our story who lost her dog that he cried. A tear wiper to a little girl moving to Mexico, where...
